Baguettes in the Desert

Yesterday was beautiful here. Woke up to 0*C but by the afternoon it was 19*. Had a quiet day, with visitors dropping by in the morning and in the evening watching a movie until 11p.m......... way too late for me.

Baguettes were the reason we had to stay up so late. Mary was able to get some yeast from Phil yesterday and decided to make baguettes with her sour-dough starter. Now if you have made baguettes you know they take time; ..... make the flour, knead the bread dough, let it sit, knead some more, put it in the frig, etc.. etc..

Since the process was started so late the dough wouldn't be ready for baking until 8:30, so a movie seemed like a good way to kill some time. Here are a few photos from our first attempt at "Baguettes in the Desert".

Once Mary had the dough to the right consistency she cut it into four balls and let them rise again.

An hour later they were ready to make into long strips and put in the oven.

Sorry no pictures of the finished product. We ate them with a little honey and cinnamon once they came out of the oven. Delicious! No we didn't eat them all, just two.

Changed my mind.  Here's a picture of the ones that survived 24 hours. Happy Valentine's Day

  1. Hi! I found you all through Renee, whom I found through Glenn. Yeah, the blog world is funny that way.
I am very much looking forward to reading your blog, as is my habit, from first to last.
If this first read is exemplar, I'm in for a treat. Your prose is divine and your pictures are art!
(I'm a little hungry for good bread all the sudden... Imagine that!)
