Heat in the Desert

I'm sure you know that living in the desert means huge daily temperature swings. Here it can be freezing when we wake up in the morning and by mid afternoon it will be 20*C.

Our solar panels are up and the system is working great. (Thanks Paul) We can use the coffee maker, toaster, water pump, lights, TV, internet and still have lots of power left over. But our furnace stopped working a month ago and going to bed with socks, hat and three layers of PJs is not my idea of being comfortable.

Yesterday we got this solution, our propane heater, and we are delighted. Last night the trailer remained at 22*C while the outside temperature went below freezing. We were toasty without a hat, socks or four layers of blankets.

This is our heater. It's a Pro-Com, duel fuel (propane or natural gas) with an automatic thermostat, and an automatic shut-off  if the oxygen supply drops below 18% in the trailer. The oxygen content of the air is usually 20%. Another nice feature of this heater is the fact it uses no electricity. It doesn't have a fan and the auto ignite is from a small AA battery, perfect system for those of us living on solar power. I like it so much I'm thinking of getting a few for our off grid home back in Bancroft.

It might be freezing at night, but "Happy Hour" finds us enjoying our friends outside.

Safe travels Don and Gillian and all of our other friends who are on the road. Hope to see you in Quartzsite before the end of March. We are in La Possa Tyson Wells at the far north end.

  1. Love your new heater, I remember the very scary propane heater we had when camping. Hooked up to the propane tank and started with a match followed by a woosh of flames. Kept us warm though!
