Deer-flies

Took yesterday off and visited friends. Marvin and Annie have started a similar journey to ours. They sold their home, bought land and will spend the next two years getting a house up and travelling south during our winter months.

Before we stopped by to walk their property they warned us that the deer flies were particularly bad this year and not to wear anything blue.

Apparently deer-flies are attracted to the colour blue and although we weren't wearing blue quickly discovered that they were attracted to anything human; hair, eyes, skin, mouth, you name it, they were prepared to bite it.

Under such circumstance it is only fitting that humans take whatever measures necessary to survive. These measures may appear ridiculous, off beat, ludicrous, laughable, unreasonable, hair-brained, etc. But when you are swarmed by thousands of deer-flies and you feel you need a blood transfusion because of loss of blood then, regardless of appearance, you will try anything to combat those nasty biting deer flies.

So, no laughs, no snickers, but here is the solution ...............

the "blue bonnet" and look how effective it is.

Can you see all those little black specks stuck to the bucket? Those are deer-flies that didn't bite and will never bite again.

You spray anything blue with a special solution called "tangle foot" then venture outdoors and enjoy your surroundings while the deer flies zoom in for a chunk of flesh only to get permanently stuck to your blue helmet. Since these plastic buckets are cheap and readily available at the dollar store they are ideal for keeping deer flies from feasting on your exposed skin. You can even hang them from your porch if you are sitting enjoying the evening sunset.

Next time we meet and you are wearing a blue bucket I'll know you read my blog; but I'll also know you will not have any deer-fly bites.

Enjoy the day and keep the bucket on your head.
